More Romany Words in Current English Usage

Following on from my last post, and to highlight the fact that Gypsy culture has been integrated with English culture for the last couple of hundred years, here's some AngloRomani loan words (I already mentioned chav, pal and cosh); at least some of these words will be familiar to fans of Only Fools and Horses:

Kushti - lucky;
Scran - food (or to beg);
Shiv - a blade / knife;
Mush - means bloke, and incidentally:
Bloke - means man, from the Romany word loke (same word in Hindi);
Wonga - means money, but derived from Romany word wanga, meaning "coal";
Nark (as in informer) - originally from the Romany word naak, meaning "nose";
Posh - disputed, but believed to derive from posh karoon, meaning "half a crown", coins which Romanichals used as buttons to show off their wealth;

Interesting, eh?

Quite the opposite of the Daily Mail's decision to portray Romanichals as troublemakers and interlopers.
